Remembering Tug
Tug McGraw was a unique man.
Full of enthusiasm and a joy for the game he loved, he left an indelible
mark on baseball and his fans. He touched the lives of thousands
of adults and children he met both as a player and after retirement.
He worked tirelessly throughout his career on behalf of his community
and charitable organizations everywhere.
With his diagnosis of brain cancer, Tug set out on a ten-month
medical journey down an unknown path. It would twist and turn as
his recovery began…and his health changed.
It was a journey that Tug never took alone. Along with a well-used
sense of humor, Tug found support in good friends, excellent medical
care, and a strong family that stood alongside him. Tug felt lucky
to have that support, and he knew that he had the benefits of financial
and professional resources not available to many others facing the
challenge of brain cancer.
Unwilling to sit and let opportunity pass him by, Tug formed a plan.
Find the best doctors in the field of brain cancer. Locate medical
researchers on the cutting edge of brain tumor research. Seek out
those improving the quality of life for brain tumor survivors and
their families.
And get their work funded.
Tug wanted to create programs for brain tumor survivors and their
families, friends and caregivers that would help them to face the
often daunting challenge of this terrible cancer. He wanted to find
partners fighting the same fight…with the same goals…and
the same inspiration. He wanted to share his story, explain what
brain cancer was all about, and inspire others to act.
So was created the Tug McGraw Foundation.
We with the Foundation remember our founder on these pages. We honor
his memory, and we celebrate his life.
He was our friend.
